Internet Service FAQs

u

What kind of internet infrastructure does Haefele Connect use?

We operate a diverse, high-performance broadband network across our service areas. Because different neighborhoods feature different infrastructure, the maximum speed available to your home depends on your exact address. Our network footprints break down as follows:

  • Next-Gen Symmetrical Fiber (XGS-PON): Available to 73% of the homes we pass, this cutting-edge, pure fiber-to-the-home network delivers blazing-fast symmetrical speeds up to 2 Gbps (equal download and upload speeds).

  • Advanced Fiber-to-the-Home (RFoG): Reaching 12% of homes, this fiber-optic infrastructure delivers ultra-reliable download speeds up to 1 Gbps.

  • High-Speed Coaxial Cable (HFC): Powering 15% of homes (including specific resort and rural pockets), our reliable cable network offers robust high-speed internet maxing out at 300 Mbps download.

Why do internet speeds and technologies vary by address?

Building modern internet infrastructure requires physically running lines neighborhood by neighborhood. Over the years, we have continuously upgraded our networks from traditional coaxial cable to state-of-the-art XGS-PON symmetrical fiber. While 85% of our network is powered by direct fiber lines (XGS-PON and RFoG), some areas are still serviced by our high-speed coax network. We are constantly expanding our pure fiber footprint to bring multi-gig speeds to more homes every day.

How do I find out which internet technology is available at my house?

Because network types can change from street to street, the fastest way to see your exact available speeds, packages, and pricing is to use our Online Address Lookup Tool. Simply type in your street address, and our interactive coverage map will instantly show you whether your home qualifies for our 2 Gbps Symmetrical Fiber, 1 Gbps Fiber, or 300 Mbps Coax plans.

What is the difference between “Symmetrical” Fiber and standard internet?

If your address falls within our 70% XGS-PON Fiber footprint, you receive symmetrical speeds. Traditional internet networks (like cable or DSL) are asynchronous, meaning they offer fast download speeds but very slow upload speeds. Symmetrical fiber means your upload speed matches your download speed exactly. This is a massive advantage for seamless video conferencing, instant cloud backups, sending large files, and lag-free online gaming.

Does Haefele Connect Provide Wireless Wi-Fi Services?

Yes! Haefele Connect provides robust, whole-home wireless networks via our Fully Managed Wi-Fi service for a low monthly fee.

While customers are always free to provide and manage their own standalone Wi-Fi routers, we highly recommend utilizing our advanced equipment. For our power users, our next-generation Wi-Fi 7 Router upgrade is included to unlock true multi-gig wireless performance on our 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps plans.

Why Choose Haefele Fully Managed Wi-Fi?

  • Whole-Home Coverage: Our premium routers deliver maximum range, wall-penetrating signals, and dual-band stability to eliminate dead zones.

  • The CommandIQ App: Gain complete control over your home network. Easily change your Wi-Fi password, set up a secure guest network, and monitor connected devices right from your phone.

  • Built-In Parental Controls: Protect your household by pausing internet access, scheduling screen-time limits, and filtering inappropriate content. (part of Total Managed Wifi)

  • 24/7 Remote Local Support: If you ever experience a coverage issue or a dropped connection, our local technical team can remotely troubleshoot, update, and optimize your router settings without needing to send a technician to your house.

u

u

Will I always get the quoted speeds?

When we provision an internet package, we deliver the full, unthrottled speed of that plan directly to your property’s Haefele ONT (fiber modem) or cable modem. However, the speeds you experience on your individual devices can vary based on several real-world factors:

🔌 Wired Connections vs. Wireless Wi-Fi

To experience the absolute maximum speed of your plan—especially on our 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps tiers—your device must be connected directly to the router using a physical Ethernet cable. Wireless Wi-Fi introduces natural interference, distance drop-offs, and physical barriers (like walls and floors) that can reduce speed tests on mobile devices.

📱 Device Limitations

Your internet speed is only as fast as the device you are using. Older smartphones, tablets, and laptops simply do not have the internal wireless chips or processors required to process gigabit or multi-gigabit data streams. For example, older Wi-Fi 5 devices typically max out around 300–400 Mbps over wireless, regardless of how fast your incoming internet plan is.

⚡ The 2 Gbps Equipment Requirement

If you subscribe to our Connect Max Fiber (2 Gbps) plan, your incoming speed exceeds the capability of a standard 1 Gbps network port. To achieve the full 2 Gbps speed on a hardwired desktop or laptop, your personal device must be equipped with a 2.5 Gbps (or higher) Ethernet network card and utilize a Cat6 or Cat6a Ethernet cable.

🌐 Out-of-Network Factors

The speed of your connection also depends on the website or server you are trying to access. If you are downloading a game or streaming a video from a platform whose own servers are congested or limited, your download will slow down, even though your Haefele connection is wide open.

💡 How to run an accurate Speed Test:

To find out how much data is actually reaching your home, you need to isolate your test from local Wi-Fi bottlenecks:

  • For Fully Managed Wi-Fi Customers: Open your CommandIQ app on your smartphone. The speed test built directly into the app measures the connection straight from our network to your Haefele router, completely bypassing wireless interference to show you the exact speed hitting your house.

  • For Customers Using Their Own Router: Disconnect from Wi-Fi, plug a computer directly into your router or ONT using a high-quality Ethernet cable, and visit our Haefele Online Speed Test Tool to run a clean, hardwired test.

Will My Internet Work If the Power Goes Out?

Whether your internet remains active during a local power outage depends entirely on the type of network technology delivering service to your home. If you keep your home equipment running using a Backup Battery (UPS) or a home generator, here is how our different networks behave:

🟢 Next-Gen Symmetrical Fiber Areas (XGS-PON)

Yes! Our core XGS-PON fiber network is entirely passive, meaning the lines running from our central office to your neighborhood do not require electricity on the poles to transmit data. As long as you provide backup power (like a UPS battery backup) to both your ONT (fiber modem) and your wireless router inside your home, your high-speed internet will continue to function perfectly during a blackout.

🟡 Advanced Fiber Areas (RFoG)

Yes, with an extra step. Like our standard fiber network, the main lines remain active during an outage. However, RFoG technology relies on an optical node mounted to the outside of your house. For your internet to work, backup power must be supplied to your inside router, the inside ONT, and the power inserter that feeds electricity to that outside node.

🔵 Coaxial Cable Areas (COAX)

Generally no, unless the outage is isolated to your house. While Haefele maintains robust backup power systems at our main central hub sites, we do not maintain individual battery backups on the active electronic amplifiers and nodes mounted out on the utility poles. If a power outage hits your neighborhood grid, the pole equipment feeding your street will lose power and the internet signal will drop—even if you are running your home router on a personal generator or battery.

💡 Pro-Tip for Fiber Customers:

Want to stay connected during a storm? You can purchase a standard Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) from any electronics retailer. Simply plug your Haefele ONT and wireless router into the UPS, and you'll enjoy hours of uninterrupted Wi-Fi on your smartphones, laptops, and tablets even when the lights go out!

u

Does Haefele have a bandwidth cap, and if so, how high is it?

Haefele only has a bandwidth cap on our lowest tier of service the 10mbps mini plan which is designed as a low cost option meant mainly for web browsing, email, and facebook.  Our higher tier packages are all unlimited data.   More information can be found in our Acceptable Use Policy.

How will the cap affect my ability to download files from the Web?

The cap does not stop your computer from downloading anything, but you will be charged for over-usage if you exceed the set limit.  The best way to keep from going over the bandwidth cap is to monitor your monthly traffic using the tool found on our local portal.

Can I still stream movies?

You can certainly stream, however, if you have an internet package that has limited data you may want to monitor your usage, as most HD movies will use 2-6GB of data per 2 hours of streaming. SD movies will generally use less than 3GB of data per a 2 hour viewing period.  For the best possible experience we do not recommend our 10Mbps mini packages for streaming.
